His name suddenly soared after being able to play in Europe and getting
a starting place in a European giant, PSV Eindhoven. Rigan is now in
the club's B team, and should be proud for being the only Asian in the
whole PSV squad.
"Rigan has amazing skills and potential. His ability to read the play,
his technique, and his skills and really good. Besides that, his parents'
support are enormous. I'm very impressed," said Ronny Pattinasarani,
his coach at SSB (football School) AS-IOP.
Rigan's road to success was fulfilled after so many sacrifices by his
father. David Pono. He not only sold most of his possessions to support
Rigan's career ever since he was seven, but he was also there every
time Rigan played football. Pono's totality was answered by Rigan when
Rigan decided to quit high school (10th grade) to play professional
football.
Rigan said, "Everywhere I played, Da always took me and waited for
me patiently. He even gave me inputs on my performance now and then."
At the beginning, Pono's ambition to make Rigan a successfull professional
football player was not fully accepted by the son. No wonder, arguments
often happened between the two. But not until Rigan arrive in Holland
that he realized the truth behind his dad's words. "To achieve success,
one must possess the mental strength steel. That's what I always instill
in him," said Pono.
When he was playing in Indonesia, Rigan was well-known for his temper.
Quite a few times he was involved in fights on the pitch. "Once, I almost
died because I was stepped on and gang-banged on by other players. Another
occasion, I was almost stabbed because I was fighting on the pitch.
Dad was also hit a by board when he was trying to save me," Rigan revealed.
"I used to always worry about Rigan's going to matches. If I remember
all those things, I'd never dream of him to ever play in Holland," said
his mother, Sri Eliyani.
The lack temper control was admitted by Rigan as his weakness. But
now, he's more able to control his emotion. "If I got mad, I channeled
that emotion to play harder. Because I'd rather holding back my emotion
than getting banned from playing," said the oldest child of ten siblings.
Any thought of playing for the Indonesian junior national team? "Honestly,
no, not yet. Father and all my family members have sacrificed everything
to support me, For now, I will play and do my best to pay them back,"
Rigan said honestly.
