Looks rough, but friendly. That's the image of Persija Jakarta's central defender, Nur'alim. Any opponent striker will think twice before trying to get the ball through thim.

He has always been feared by other players. Jabrik, Nur'alim's nickname, has always played the game wholeheartedly. His career started from the bottom rung of football competition in the country. Starting from tarkam (tarikan kampung -- amateur football matches among villages), having had to buy his own shoes, and now to become one of the elite players in Indonesia, as well as a national team player.

" I want to improve the image of our national team in the public's eyes. For that, I never stop training myself hard," said Jabrik.

If there's a fault about Nur'alim, it's that sometimes he appears too casual. But nine out of 10 times, he gets away with it.

The Persija captain strolls about the pitch because he knows he's Boss. He is not fluttered about the sight of forwards running in a zigzag towards him. He just stands there and nonchalantly robs the ball of the fella's feet (he did that to Pahang's Azizul Kamaluddin and Brunei's Patron Akakpo!).

Maybe the quality of the opposition here doesn't call for any urgency in him.

Dutch Division One outfit Vitessa FC was reportedly so impressed that they wanted him for trials! But the dream move didn't fall through and now the ultra-cool Nur'alim is hoping for the next best thing - a move to Singapore.

He is ecstatic about the prospect of coming here because he had heard so much about the league and has many friends in Singapore. In fact, he knows enough about our league to conclude that we lack technically-gifted players. He should thus have no problems handling S-League strikers.

Star Rating: 9/10
