Born with a perfect striker's name
(Pamungkas means the Ultimate), Bambang is the great young hope in the
Indonesian team. The youngster, who plays a football club Persija Jakarta,
only claimed his place in the starting line-up midway through Asian
Cup qualifying, taking Widodo C Putra's place alongside Rochy Putiray.
He responded with three goals in three matches.
"He's a newcomer, but Bambang is
very young and very talented," says Tri Goestoro. "I think in the future
in one or two years he will be our star."
The youngster has already been linked
with moves to several big European clubs, and is currently playing EHC
Norad in Holland. He is well known for his aerial ability despite his
lack of height.

Even though he is very young, his
ability to create goals is just simply superb. This was proven when
he became the top scorer of last season's league, LI VI, after collecting
24 goals even after his team, Persija Jakarta, didn't make it to the
final.
The true ambition of this youngster,
however, doesn't stop within the boundaries of this nation. He is really
eager to have a chance to play in Europe, and as soon as the season
was over, he flew right away to Europe.
According to Bambang's agent in
Europe, Anthony van Dalen, there are several clubs in Europe that want
to give him try-outs, such as Roda JC Kerkrade from Holland, and FC
Koeln and Bayern Moenchenladbach from Germany. But Bambang doesn't let
dreams take over his career, and he decided to join EHC Norad, a Third
Division club in Holand. It's better for him this way, because now he's
almost guaranteed a starting place in the lineup rather than always
being on the bench had he decided to go for the top clubs. Moreover,
by playing in the lower league, he'll have an easier time to adapt to
European-style football.
Besides European clubs, some local
Indonesian clubs are also very interested in him. Persebaya Surabaya
andPSM Makassar (defending champions), just to name a few.
With a height 170 cm, it'd be foolish
for opponent players to underestimate this player who idolizes his striking
partner in the national team, Kurniawan Dwi Yulianto, for Bambang is
well-known for his aerial prowess. His jumping is very high and his
heading accuracy is a nightmare for any goalie.
Before playing for the Indonesian
senior national team, he played for the Central Java junior team and
was chosen Most Valuable Player in 1996 Haornas Cup, a special tournament
for teenage football. He was also the top-scorer in the national team
for Asian Cup U-19 Group V, packing in 7 goals. With all this experience
in the junior lever, the transition to the senior national team was
a smooth one.

This is the man who took just 20
minutes to destroy Brunei.
The "National Bomber" as he's affectionately
called, is bloody deadly.
He zips in front of defenders to
make the most of the worst laid passes. He doesn't wait for the ball
to arrive at his feet and his elusiveness is his strength.
His finishing? Out of this world.
Against Brunei, he was sandwiched between two defenders - with the one
behind him clipping his ankles - and he flicked the ball into goal with
his heel.
No wonder Bayern Munich once pursued
him.
