In Indonesia, players who can fill the role of left-back winger and play it well can be counted with fingers. One of those rare players is Alexander Pulalo. Formerly of Pelita Solo, he nos has moved to PSM Makassar. His new job is to replace Aji Santoso, the "legendary" left-back winger who has moved back to his hometown to play for Persema Malang.

The expectation on Alex to play as well as, or even better than, Aji Santoso is great. But it doesn't lower his self-confidence. Ina victorious friendly match against Persikota which ended 4-1, he contributed one assist.

He said, "I don't see the job of replacing Aji as a burden. Everybody has his own strengths and weaknesses. I now feel challenged after being able to play in a big club like PSM."

"In attacking, Alex is not as agressive as Aji. But he has a better stamine and a strong defensive chracteristic. We do need a player like him," said Syamsuddin Umar, PSM's head coach.

Looking from what Syamsuddin said, it looks like the team doesn't doubt his ability anymore. He doesn't even have any problem adapting with the team.

"Alex will be able to adapt quickly because some of the players in this team, such as Kurniawan and Carlos de Mello, have played with him before," said Bima Sakti, PSM's midfielder and Alex's old teammate in Pelita.

As a native son of Papua, Alex also follows the development of his sports in his province. But this father of two daughters doesn't want to mix politics and sports. "Sports and politics are two different things. I'm not interested in discussing politics. I live from football, and that's why I work hard fot it," Alex said firmly.

In the beginning, Alex never thought of living off his life from football. Seven years ago, he still played football as a hobby. But sweet opportunities came when he took Irian (Papua) to win PON XIII (the National Sports Tournaments) and then joined the Primavera team, and all those changed his life.

Now, after years of playing as a professional football player, he feels comfortable but not satisfied. One of the reasons behind his move from Pelita to PSM is that he's hoping of winning the title with PSM. That achievement will complete his career. That's understandable, since the best thing that ever happened to him and Pelita was getting to the playoffs.

"With a squad like this, I'm sure that PSM has a great potential of defending the title. Then my hope of taking a team to winning a championship will be fulfilled," said Alex
