Semen Padang slaughtered Jakarta FC, Purwanto scored four

April 11, 2001

"The Red Bulls" Semen Padang registered a new record win in Bank Mandiri Indonesian League (LIBM) VII on Wednesday (4/11). Against a strong team Jakarta FC, they put an amazing performance and superbly slaughtered the visitors 7-0. Their striker, Purwanto, had four goals in the match, and maybe rather ironically, Jakarta FC was the his club before he moved to Semen Padang.

With this result, Semen Padang jumped from tenth-placed to seventh with 16 points in the Western Conference. Jakarta FC, on the other hand, went down from ninth to eleventh with 14 points.

Playing in front of about 6000 fans, both teams played hard and this resulted in five yellow cards for both teams. For the first thirty minutes, both teams looked about equal. But after a longshot (40 meters) from Suwarno went in the 36th minute, Jakarta's players lost control of the game. Suwarno then added another one just one minute before halftime. Second half completely belonged to Semen Padang.

Purwanto, who was called up for national team selection for 2002 World Cup qualifiers but didn't make to the final squad, opened his tally just seconds after the second half started. He then ran amok and added three more in the 65th, 79th, and 86th minutes. Before, in the 74th minute, national team attacking midfielder Ellie Aiboy also scored to complete the final score to 7-0.

Semen Padang's head coach Jenniwardin himself couldn't believe that his team could win such with a wide margin against a top team like Jakarta FC.

"This is a big moral boost for our team in facing the second half of the season. If we could thoroughly beat a big team like Jakarta FC, why can't we do the same against others?" said Jenniwardin.

In another match in the Western Conference, hosts 'Naga Bonar' PSDS Deli Serdang also had a big 4-0 win against Persikabo Kab. Bogor. Three of the four goals were scored by their foreign player Daniel Tisavak in the 23rd, 32nd, and 61st minutes. Another goal was scored by M. Arifin Sinaga in the 34th minute.

With this win, PSDS went up to the tenth place from previously twelfth. Persikabo, on the other hand, still remained in the thirteenth placed out of fourteen teams.
