PSM Makassar are officially the hosts After receiving the reports from Kelly Sathiraj (AFC Director of Competitions) and Simson Thompson (AFC Marketing Limited), Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has finally and officially agreed to give PSM Makassar the honor to host 2000/2001 Asian Champions Cup, March 21-25. Football Association of Indonesia (FAI) Secretary General Tri Goestoro said that, "We've received the official letter on Friday (3/9), and it was signed by AFC Secretary General Dato' Peter Velappan." Tri added that during the inspection, Mr. Sathiraj and Mr. Thompson were impressed with the hardwork and determination from PSM, who has done an exceptional job in complying with AFC's demands to be able to host the big event. They were satisfied with the condition of Mattoangin Stadium, although the grass needs to be trimmed to make it more perfect. They also checked the lightning of the stadium, as well as four additional football fields to be used for practice by the four teams. Tri further explained that the main factor that almost canceled the event to be held in Makassar was the recent ethnic violence in Sampit, Kalimantan. "They were worried about the Sampit tragedy, and even the Chinese team Shandong Luneng thought that Makassar and Sampit were located in the same island. Now that we have straightened out the fact, AFC is giving us its full support," said Tri. Even more good news for all the teams competing in the event is that the security will be taken care of fully by Provincial Police Department of South Sulawesi, not just City Police Department of Makassar. from: Media Indonesia
